Student Visa

General Requirements for Student Visa

The first step in acquiring a student visa is to get accepted by a SEVP certified school within the United States. Most academic students, including those in language training will receive the “F” type visa. Nonacademic vocational students will generally receive an “M” type visa.

Students should apply for their visa as soon as possible to allow ample time for processing. However the Embassy is only able to issue your student visa 120 days or less, in advance of the course of study registration date. If you apply prior to this, the Embassy will hold your application until it is able to issue the visa.

If this is your first (initial) or beginning students, you will be restricted to enter the United States more than 30 days prior to your report date shown on the form I-20.

What is SEVIS and SEVP?:

SEVIS is the “Student and Exchange Visitor Information System” and is an Internet based system that maintains accurate and current information on Non-Immigrant students (F & M visa).

SEVP is the “Student and Exchange Visitor Program”, is designed to help the Department of Homeland Security to better monitor school exchange programs.

All student applications must have a SEVIS generated I-20 from, issued by an educational institution approved by DHS.

The Immigration and National Act is very specific to the requirements which must be met by applications to qualify for the student visa. The Consular Officer will determine whether you qualify for the visa.

You will be required to show proof of:

1. Have a residence abroad, with no immediate intention of abandoning that residence

2. Intend to depart from the United States upon completion of the course of study.
